On my personal "do not buy" list are coins issued by the National Collector's Mint. The U.S. Mint has issued warnings about this company's misleading advertisements in the past, particularly its "Freedom Tower" coins. National Collector's Mint ads imply that Freedom Tower coins have meaningful amounts of precious metal in them when they do not. In addition, despite the perception they often give to the contrary, nothing this "Mint" makes has any association whatsoever with the genuine U.S. Mint, and it is my opinion that the coins they sell are, and will remain, virtually worthless as an investment collectible.

$500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 U.S. Federal Reserve Notes. Most $500 and $1,000 bills are quite common, and are typically worth only a small premium over face value. Circulated 1934 series notes are usually worth from $500 to $800 for the $500s and from $1,000 to $1,400 for the $1,000s, depending on condition. The 1928 series usually carries an extra 10% to 20% premium. Uncirculated $500 and $1,000 bills are quite desirable, although they are usually worth no more than twice face value. All Star Note high denomination bills are very rare, and $5,000 and $10,000 bills are worth much more than face value unless they are damaged, and we would suggest consultation with one of our currency experts if you possess one of these notes.

In general, gold becomes more desirable in times of bank failures. When dollars were fully convertible into gold, both were regarded as money. However, most people preferred to carry around paper banknotes rather than the somewhat heavier and less divisible gold coins. If people feared their bank would fail, a bank run might have been the result. This is what happened in the USA during the Great Depression of the 1930s, leading President Roosevelt to impose a national emergency and to outlaw the holding of gold by US citizens then known as Executive Order 6102 which has since been ended.

This is a video I had to share. It's been in multiple blogs already, but every time I watch it, it still amazes me that someone took the time to set up 10,000 coins on their edge. Personally, I don't...
